Why not use the roof pitch to order a triangle gable vent?
Well...
Calculating the roof pitch sounds great until the framer aims for a 6/12 pitch roof and cuts slightly off the line of the rafters.
This minor change in the rafter end connecting to the ridge will drastically change the pitch of the roof by a degree or two.
Resulting in a few inches difference in a gable vent measure.
To ensure the best fit of a vent, we only use the width and height of triangle vents.
The difference in a 6/12 pitch on a vent verses a 6.3/12 or a 5.9/12 pitch can be 6 or 8 inches of height difference on average.
This may result in framing adjustments required
or additional trim work to hide the difference in the pitches from the overhang and the gable vent.
Your framer may have hit the nail on the head and got each rafter perfect.
But there are several factors that may not have been known.
Was there shaky hands involved?
In a hurry to finish the framing?
Late evening and a beer was involved?
Or even late evening and a beer should have been involved?
Of course, if you were the framer, then you know anything can move that pencil line slightly when using a saw.
So, to ensure a good fit with every vent ordered, we will always ask for the width and height of the vent.
Never the pitch.
